Omnivore Pin-up: Ralph, 28, south London

Drinker of fine wines, lover of beautiful women, smoker of many cigarettes, Ralph is an outcomes research manager from Lincolnshire. What are you reading at the moment?

Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy. A fantastic book about obsession and denial in a time of social exclusion and bizarre attitudes. I am loving it.

What have you just finished reading?

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I love Murakami, but this was not his best despite being his self-proclaimed magnum opus. He manages to convey crushing boredom in an exciting way.

What are you planning to read next?

I have my eye on The Dreyfus Affair by Piers Paul Read. Not perhaps the most sexy title but might give me some insight into the French. I am also planning to re-read One Hundred Years of Solitude in honor of our recently dear departed comrade, the great Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I love this book; it got me into magic realism. Marquez was the master of the genre and no one holds a candle.

Which author do you have a crush on?

Sylvia Plath was apparently bang tidy

What’s the sexiest thing you have ever read?

Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem ‘Spanish Dancer’ translated by Stephen Mitchell. I read it on a boat and had to dive into the water to cool off.

What book would you give to someone you wanted to impress?

Something short…
