Deborah Levy and Juan Pablo Villalobos, Keats House

September 5, 2013 @ 7:00 pm

“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way” – Leo Tolstoy

With razor-sharp humour and curiosity, celebrated authors Deborah Levy and Juan Pablo Villalobos explore the meaning of family and belonging.

Deborah Levy’s novel Swimming Home was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2012, and her latest collection of stories, Black Vodka, has been shortlisted for the International Frank O’Connor Award. From swans with a sinister sleeping sickness to a forest outside Prague, Black Vodka dissects twenty-first century lives, considering how love changes us, and how we change ourselves for love.

Juan Pablo Villalobos was born in Mexico, in 1973. His first novel, Down the Rabbit Hole, was the first translation to be shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and the book has been translated into 15 languages. In his second novel, Quesadillas, Villalobos serves up a wild banquet of Mexican satire, tackling politics, big families and what it means to be middle class. Quesadillas is winner of the English PEN Award.
